One of my favorite things in the world to do is to find something old and make something new from it. I like to see potential in something that otherwise would be given away or thrown out.
I’ve had this dress from the Gap for like 4 years and NEVER liked the way it looked on me. Something was wrong with the top portion and the straps were too skinny to support the weigh of the dress. It kiiind of looked like this:
So after it staring at me for 4 years in my closet.. I decided to do something about it. The maxi/hobo style skirts and dresses are really in right now, so I thought… I’ll make it into a skirt. I took some photos along the way, so maybe you can do the same!
Start with an old dress that you want to refurbish
Get some elastic, matching thread, your scissors, and your sewing machine.
First, cut off the top portion of your dress and fit it to where you want the elastic to go.
Then, turn your “skirt” inside out and fold down the top part of your skirt to form a casing about as wide as the elastic you’re using (be sure to leave room for seam allowance).
Then sew around the width of your skirt leaving about one inch open for the elastic to go inside the casing.
To measure the amount of elastic you need, measure the portion of your waist where you want your skirt to hit and subtract 3-4 inches from that measurement (depending on how stretchy your elastic is).
Add your elastic (be sure not to get it twisted up inside there… I always do this- annoying!) and sew the two ends of your elastic together with a zig-zag stitch.
Once your elastic is in there, finish sewing up your casing aaand you’re finished. See? that was so easy.
And you’re probably thinking, “Caroline, you did not have to post a tutorial on how to do this… my pet fish could have figured this one out!” And you’re right. I don’t mean to insult your intelligence. However, I just want you all to see that something you LOVE (and I love this skirt) can be made of something that’s been staring at you for years!
grab a stylish belt an a cute matching mini-bow headband and you’re good to go, my friend! 🙂
hope this inspired you to get in yo’ closet and start creating with what you’ve already got.
also, would any of you be interested in a “closet sale” on my blog? I’ve been cleaning out my room and have so many things I need to part with. (skirts, dresses, tops…) What are your thoughts? If no one’s interested, I’ll just give the clothes to goodwill! (haha)
