First Draft: Out and About Dress

These photos were taken back in October, but I’m just sharing them here. Why? I don’t know. This is the first draft I sewed of my Out and About Dress that will be releasing as a PDF pattern hopefully/probably by mid-February. Oh I love this one! It was a long time coming and a design that’s been in my head for ages and I’m loving seeing it come to fruition.

Want to know some details? This dress is made from knit fabric with a gathered waist. There will be two sleeve and two hem options. The sleeves have a “cuff” finishing (my favorite!)

I’d love to know what you think!

  1. Your dress looks great! I’m looking forward to your pattern release so I can give it a try!

  2. I absolutely love this dress! I will definitely be waiting on pins and needles for the pattern. Would it work with a thicker knit? I just bought some lovely leopard ponte at Hobby Lobby last week, and I might save it for this!

    1. yes! the black maxi i made (link at bottom of this post) was made from ponte as well- it drapes really nicely 🙂
      glad you are excited!!!

    1. oh, hadn’t seen that one! similar, yes, but very constructed very differently. also, the waist on the out and about dress is gathered, it isn’t (what appears to be?) a circle skirt. 🙂

  3. I loved this pattern when I first saw it in the maxi length. My daughter would look fabulous in the shorter length. It’s certainly a cross-generation design.

  4. It looks like a great dress!. My goal this year is to conquer my fear of knits so I think this may have to go on my “to sew” list once you release the pattern!

  5. Hi, Love the dress! It really stopped me in my tracks (supposed to be making kids lunch). Anyway, I think this will be my treat for sticking to my new workout schedule…. (buying the pattern) when it’s released.

  6. In L O V E!!! Can’t wait for the release! I’ve admired this one and your black maxi. Great show of your wonderful talent! I cannot explain how much you have inspired me! Keep it up!

  7. I just sewed my first knit dress as a tester for GreenStyleCreations! I am used to sewing clothes for my son. This looks cute, love the 3/4 length sleeves.

  8. Love! I’d love to test the pattern if you need testers! I had my daughter 7 months ago and finally getting to my original weight, so I’m ready to start sewing up a storm for me. I think she has enough outfits that I’ve made her for the next few months. 🙂 Looking forward to the release!

  9. I loved the maxi version of this dress and this version is great too – I can’t wait for you to release the pattern. Looks really comfy too 🙂

  10. LOVE it! I will definitely be buying it when it comes out! I have one question. I started out quilting and took a class for The Staple Dress…I see that you did your dress in a knit. Would it work with woven/cotton fabric? I never find knits that I like…someone should fix that! I am starting the Washi dress this weekend. OR I might start with your circle/ice skater skirt first….i haven’t decided. I have to buy a plain fabric for the Washi incase it turns out bad. That way it might be wearable 😉 Thanks for all you do. I am such a (dorky) fan of yours!

  11. It looks beautiful! It seems like the pattern would work in so many colors and patterns that it would be a great staple piece to have. I’m looking forward to its release!!

  12. Such a cute dress! I just stumbled on Jamie Christina’s new Lark pattern and was searching for some made up and found your blog. Love the Lark Cardi you made! I need that pattern now! And this little Out and About dress you are working looks so comfy, casual, and pretty at the same time! Glad I found you!

    1. so glad you stopped by! yes, isn’t the Lark pattern one you just CAN’T pass up!? 🙂

  13. Oh, I love it! I can’t wait for the pattern. I’ve just begun sewing with knits on my serger. It’s opened up a whole new world for me. I am giddy with excitement. Do you sew your knits on a serger? (forgive me if you’ve already talked about it, i’ve just startd reading your blog- and i love it!) Thanks for all of the inspiration!

    1. I sew them on both- depending on my mood! This dress can be sewn either way 🙂
Glad you are enjoying the blog, xoxoxo!

  14. Love, Love your site! Just stumbled across you….so happy!! Looking forward to your dress release and reading all that I have missed! Keep it coming!

  15. This dress is so darling! Would you mind telling me how much fabric it takes to make? I just found a knit that would be so perfect for this dress and I want to make sure I have enough of it for when the pattern gets released!
